The Day We Lost Our RV Cargo On The Highway

First of all, stuff happens out on the road when you are traveling frequently. And we all make mistakes.

Even though we have been full-time RVers for almost 9 years, we still figure things out the hard way sometimes and this day was one of those times.

One of the largest pieces of gear we bring along for RVing is our honey wagon, AKA Blue Boy.

This wagon is used to transport black tank waste to the dump station during longer stays when we don’t have sewer hookups in our campsite.

While it’s convenient not to have to pack up the whole RV and drive to the dump station each time we need to dump, the honey wagon is large and cumbersome to haul.

We tow a large fifth wheel RV behind a dually pick-up truck, and there is just enough room in the back of the truck with our hitch for the honey wagon on travel days.

The problem?

On this scary day, the truck’s tailgate popped down, and the honey wagon rolled out of the back of the truck, under the fifth wheel, and out into the middle of the highway.

Thank God it didn’t hit another car, or we could have killed someone that day.

In fact, just a few moments earlier, we commented on how many bikers were behind us on the highway since it was Daytona Bike Week in Florida.

This was a scary mistake that we never want to repeat again. Properly securing cargo is a matter of safety sometimes, and we searched for a better solution.

We looked to retractable ratchet straps and tried out Strapinno. Read on to learn why these are the perfect easy-to-use straps for RVers. Problem solved!

Avoid this scary RV mistake!😬 #rv

Why Retractable Ratchet Straps Are Essential for RVers

When you’re traversing the country in your RV, securing your belongings is crucial. You may find that you have a variety of gear to tie down.

From camp chairs, blue boy wagons, ladders, kayaks, bikes, and paddle boards to motorized toys in a toy hauler such as four-wheelers and motorcycles, RVers bring a lot of stuff along.

Retractable ratchet straps are not just a convenience; they are a necessity for your safety and the security of your cargo. Ratchet straps tighten easily to better secure items.

Ratchet straps that retract offer increased convenience because there is no excess strap to tie off or secure.

Here is why Strapinno retractable ratchet straps make sense for RVing:

Security: These straps are specifically designed to hold your gear firmly in place. Whether you’re carrying kayaks, bikes, or a mobile waste tank, the sturdy hooks and reliable tie-down points ensure that nothing shifts during transit.

Ease of UseAuto-retract ratchet straps eliminate the hassle commonly associated with traditional tie-downs. With an auto retract mechanism, you can easily pull the strap to the desired length, and it locks in place, then retracts with a push of a button.

This function is a huge time-saver and makes the process of loading and unloading your gear effortless.

Durability: Made from high-strength materials, these straps withstand the rigors of the road. The forged steel bolt-on d rings or S-hooks and heavy-duty trailer tie-down rings ensure that even the heaviest loads are secured on your roof rack, truck bed, or trailer.

Versatility: For RVers carrying motorcycles or other vehicles, heavy duty self-retracting ratchet straps and extension straps provide the adjustable length needed. They can function as a come along strap, transom tie, or just a simple means to secure outdoor equipment.

Investing in quality retractable ratchet straps gives you peace of mind, knowing that your belongings are safely fastened. With the additional benefit of being a lockable ratchet strap, it’s clear why these are an indispensable tool for your travels.

How Do Ratchet Straps Work?

Straps with ratchet are an essential tool for securing all types of gear and come in various sizes, such as a 1 inch strap or 2 inch ratchet strap of various lengths to handle different weights and loads.

Their mechanism allows you to tighten the strap around your item, ensuring it’s safely secured in the back of your truck, on top of the rack, or any place in your RV.

Setting up ratchet straps depends on the type of strap you are using.

Most brands involve opening the ratchet handle and slotting the strap through the spool. Then pulling the strap through, eliminating any slack.

This is where Strapinno stands apart from other brands. Strapinno ratcheting straps are already threaded and ready to use right from the box.

To tighten ratchet straps, simply pump the ratchet handle up and down. The spool winds the strap, securing the item tightly.

Depending on the brand, once tight, lock the ratchet down to secure the strap in place.

Strapinno straps automatically lock into place, saving time and resulting in greater gear security.

Types of ratchet straps:

  • Endless ratchet straps: Ideal for bundling items together without hooks.
  • Short ratchet strapssmall ratchet straps, and mini ratchet straps: Perfect for lighter loads that need less strap length and can fit in tighter spaces.
  • Retractable ratchet tie-down strap: This is the type of strap offered by Strapinno. Convenient for quick release and retraction, these self winding ratchet straps keep straps neatly stored. This removes the need to tie or secure excess straps and prevents tangling.

Hook types:

  • Latch hook: Provides an extra layer of security by closing the hook to prevent slippage. Strapinno uses an S-hook with a safety latch for added protection.

When securing your cargo, whether it’s smaller items or heavy cargo, remember that the correct product type makes all the difference. By choosing a reliable retractable ratchet tie-down strap, such as those offered by Strapinno, you ensure the safety and stability of your items during transit.

We Tried Out Strapinno’s Easy Retractable Ratchet Straps And Here Is What We Found

When securing cargo in your RV, space-saving solutions are important, and Strapinno’s retractable ratchet straps are a game-changer for this.

Unlike traditional tie-downs, these self-winding ratchet straps are remarkably compact, freeing up valuable RV storage space.

What caught our eye was the retractable mechanism coupled with an EZ release system, which made fastening and unfastening loads a breeze.

The standout feature we noticed was the ease of use, especially for solo trips.

The retractable ratchet strap mechanism maintains consistent tension, making it a one-person job.

Gone are the days of needing an extra set of hands to keep the strap taut. Safety is equally improved with the incorporation of full bend S hooks with safety clips, ensuring that the straps stay firmly in place.

Operation of the ratcheting and retracting components is both smooth and effortless.

We appreciate that these straps prevent tangling, commonly seen with traditional straps, where a lack of tension often leads to frustrating knots.

With conventional straps we have used, managing excess strap length typically involves time-consuming tying or knotting, which can get caught or cause damage as they may flap dangerously in the wind.

Strapinno’s straps eliminate this issue with their self-contained retractable design.

Lastly, safety is always a top priority, and these straps excel here too.

Typically, using ratchet straps comes with a risk of injury from accidental clip releases or the straps coming loose while under tension and hitting someone.

I have been hit when traditional strap hooks have popped off. These issues are addressed with Strapinno’s s-hook with a safety latch.

The straps feel very substantial but also comfortable to use. They feature ergonomic padded handles and black-coated buckles.

Strapinno’s straps are a such a huge improvement over traditional tie downs.

Their heavy-duty construction paired with a storage bag as part of the original packaging for portability offers peace of mind and great value for the price.

In terms of longevity, while we’ve only used them briefly, however, the initial quality feels durable enough to suggest they’ll hold up well over time.

All in all, Strapinno straps deliver what they promise, and we highly recommend them.

Other Customer Reviews Of Strapinno Ratchet Straps

We’ve looked through product reviews and feedback for the Strapinno Retractable Ratchet Straps and can say that they’ve been a game-changer for many who value convenience in securing cargo.

Often appreciated for the convenient retractable mechanism, users express relief at not having to deal with tangles or the hassle of wrapping up straps after use. No more feeding straps.

One reviewer described a sense of liberation from their decade-long ratchet strap woes now that they’ve turned to these retractable rachet straps for transporting equipment.

The smooth coiling back into the housing and the provided easy storage bag seem to be significant advantages.

Some users, who’ve used these straps with outdoor gear, mentioned the ease of use, highlighting the stress-free experience of attaching items to the truck bed.

The rubber-coated handles and heavy-duty performance, even during solo use, have been commended.

However, while the design received praise, there’s mention of them being slightly bulkier than traditional non-ratcheting straps. This could be a trade-off for the convenience offered.

The general consensus is that Strapinno retractable straps are a quality, user-friendly product that simplifies the process of securing all sorts of cargo.

How To Use Strapinno’a Easy Retractable Ratching Straps

If you have ever wonderedhow to work ratchet straps or how to tie ratchet straps, we have got you covered. Setting up your retractable ratchet tie down straps is a straightforward process. Follow these easy steps to ensure that your cargo is secured properly:

1) Release the Strap

    • Begin by pressing the release button and lifting the handle to approximately 90 degrees, which allows access to the strap.
    • Place your cargo in the desired location.

2) Secure the Hooks

    • Pull out the webbing and attach the first S-hook with safety latch on your vehicle’s tie-down point or other secure anchor point.
    • Pull out the webbing and glide the strap over your cargo item to the second tie-down point.
    •  Fasten the second S-hook to a stable anchor point.

3) Tighten the Strap

    • Press the release button and move the handle up and down, which tightens the strap over your load.
    • Continue this action until the strap is firmly securing the cargo without over-tightening.

4) Lock the Ratchet

    • Ensure the load is adequately secured by pushing the handle in the down position.
    • This will lock the strap in place, completing the process of securing your cargo.

Using ratchet straps appropriately is important for safety.

Always double-check that the straps are not twisted and that the hooks are correctly positioned and latched to prevent your cargo from shifting or sustaining damage during transport.

How To Release The Ratchet Strap

When you’re ready to remove your cargo, releasing ratchet straps is a straightforward process. Here’s how to safely loosen ratchet straps without hassle:

  1. Find the handle on the ratchet assembly.
  2. Lift the ratchet handle approximately 90 degrees into the fully open position. This action will free the tension on the strap.
  3. Gently pull the S-hook off of the tie-down point.
    • Upon unhooking, expect the webbing to retract automatically, tidying itself into the ratchet’s housing.

It’s essential to always release the strap’s tension prior to removing the first S-hook.

Always handle the ratchet and straps with care to maintain safety and prolong the life of your ratchet straps.

Strapinno Retractable Ratcheting Straps Materials

When selecting retractable ratcheting straps for your RV adventures, you want to look for straps with quality construction and materials.

The webbing of Strapinno auto-retract straps is made from industrial-grade polyester, a material renowned for its durability and resistance to abrasion

This ensures that the straps can withstand the rigors of securing loads over long distances.

The length of ratcheting straps is typically measured from hook to hook, providing an easy way to determine the right size you need for securing your cargo.

Polyester webbing is especially advantageous for tie-down applications due to its low stretchability, keeping your load secure without significant give.

Maintaining tension is crucial for safety and stability.

As for the ratcheting mechanism itself, it’s constructed from stainless steel.

This material choice not only adds to the overall strength but also prevents rust, ensuring the long-term reliability of the ratchet mechanism, even in various weather conditions.

  • Straps Material: 100% Industrial-Grade Polyester.
  • Strap Length Measurement: From Hook to Hook.
  • Polyester Advantages: Durable, Wear-Resistant, Low Stretch.
  • Ratcheting Mechanism Material: Stainless Steel durable hardware.

We spend most of our time RVing throughout humid Florida and frequently camp on the ocean, so we wanted to choose quality materials that will last.

Retractable Ratcheting Strap Maintenance

Proper maintenance of your retractable ratchet straps will ensure their longevity and functionality.

Lubrication is key to keeping the retraction mechanism operating smoothly.

Follow these tips to maintain your retractable ratchet straps effectively:

  • Select the Right Lubricant: Only use a silicone-based lubricant. Avoid common greases, household oils, or aerosol spray lubricants, which might attract dirt or become gummy.
  • Application Process: Apply the lubricant incrementally to the ratcheting mechanism. Start with a small amount and add more as needed to achieve the desired smoothness in operation.
  • Frequency: Re-lubricate the mechanism periodically, especially after it has been used in dusty or wet conditions.
  • Where to Buy: Silicone-based lubricant can be obtained from any local hardware store.

Remember, maintenance is a routine process.

By following these steps, you’re not only prolonging the life of your straps but also ensuring their reliability when securing loads during your travels.

Strapinno Versus Competitors

When you’re securing cargo with ratchet straps, Strapinno stands out in the market for a few key reasons.

Traditional ratchet straps often require careful handling to avoid tangling and can be time-consuming to set up.

While traditional straps may leave you with unwanted slack, Strapinno’s retractable design ensures there’s no excess strap to worry about.

This feature not only saves time but also prevents potential damage or accidents caused by loose ends.

Strapinno straps have an innovative design that includes a variable-speed automatic retracting mechanism, which simplifies the process, making them hassle-free and more time-efficient.

  • Ease of Use: Strapinno straps retract with ease, eliminating the frustration associated with unwinding and storing traditional ratchet straps.
  • Safety: The controlled retraction feature minimizes the risk of injury or damage to cargo, which is often a concern with traditional straps that may retract too quickly.

Unlike many other ratchet straps commonly found at retailers like Canadian TireHome Depot, Lowes, or Harbor Freight, you don’t need a manual to start using Strapinno straps.

Strapinno straps come ready to use right from the box, eliminating the often-frustrating task of threading or assembling the straps before you secure items like a lawn mower or power scooter to cargo carrier.

The robust and reliable S-hook design that comes with each Strapinno strap is crafted to provide enhanced security.

These hooks include a safety latch to prevent them from accidentally dislodging, offering you peace of mind while transporting heavy equipment in your pickup truck or RV

Competing brands like Rhino USA retractable ratchet straps, Vulcan, Husky ratchet straps, and Rocket Straps may offer durable straps, but to find the best ratchet straps, it’s essential to compare safety features such as the full bend latching S-hooks and retractability that Strapinno offers.

If you’re seeking the best ratchet straps that prioritize safety, convenience, and efficiency in the United States, Strapinno provides the best choice against other brands in the market.

Strapinno Ratcheting Cargo Bar

One last option from the Strapinno product line to consider when securing cargo for your RV adventures is a ratcheting cargo bar.

Strapinno’s Ratching Cargo Bar prevents shifting cargo during transit. The ratchet mechanism provides a secure grip, preventing any unwanted movement.

The Strapinno Ratcheting Cargo Bar is great for truck beds. It fits spaces from 44-74 inches and is made from alloy steel. The maximum cargo load for the ratcheting cargo bar is 330 pounds.

Are there any notable advantages of using Strapinno retractable ratchet straps over cam buckle straps for securing cargo?

Strapinno retractable ratchet straps provide a more robust solution for securing cargo with their mighty capacity and secure tie-downs compared to cam buckle straps.

This is critical for RVers who may transport heavy or bulky items.

What are the primary features to look for in high-quality retractable ratchet straps?

When choosing high-quality retractable ratchet straps, look for features like abrasion-resistant standard webbing, durable construction, and a robust load limit to ensure longevity and safety.

They are designed for durability and to maintain functionality after repeated use, making them a reliable choice for frequent travelers. Proper maintenance and storage will further extend the lifespan of these straps.

What is better than ratchet straps?

Ratchet straps are one of the most secure tie-down options due to their ability to maintain high tension; however, retractable ratchet straps like those from Strapinno add an extra level of convenience without compromising security. These retractable ratcheting straps prevent tangling and remove the need to secure excess straps.

Do retractable ratchet straps work?

Yes, retractable ratchet straps work effectively by combining the secure hold of traditional ratchet straps with a self-retracting mechanism for ease of use.

This makes the process of securing and releasing cargo much quicker and reduces the likelihood of strap tangling. Users can expect the same strength and security as traditional straps with added convenience.

What is an endless ratchet strap?

An endless ratchet strap is a loop of webbing without hooks, designed to wrap around objects and feed back into the ratchet mechanism to secure items together tightly. Endless straps are versatile for applications where hooks cannot be used, providing a secure method to bundle items or attach them to fixed points.

How do you open a retractable ratchet strap?

To open a retractable ratchet strap, press the release lever or button on the ratchet handle, which disengages the locking mechanism. Once engaged, the webbing can be pulled out to the desired length or allowed to retract back into the housing. Some brands like Strapinno feature an EZ release that simplifies this step.

Are retractable ratchet straps worth it?

Retractable ratchet straps are worth the investment for those who frequently secure cargo and seek convenience. Their self-retracting design minimizes the time spent on setup and takedown and contributes to better organization by preventing loose straps from tangling or dragging. They’re especially handy for RV users who often load and unload gear.

What’s the best length of a ratchet tie down strap to use?

The best length of a ratchet tie-down strap depends on the size and type of cargo you need to secure. A general guideline is to select a strap that is long enough to reach around your load and anchor points with some excess, typically within the 10 to 15-foot range. For larger RV cargo, longer straps may be necessary.

What are the weight limits for different types of ratchet straps?

Weight limits for ratchet straps can vary widely; it is imperative to check the working load limit (WLL) and the break strength rating. Strapinno straps are known for their robust build, offering various options that can cater to lighter loads as well as straps capable of securing heavy items safely. Always choose a strap with a WLL that is appropriate for your cargo’s weight.
